The Risk
We all know only too well the power of
fire and the havoc and destruction it can cause, the
horrific injuries and of course, worst of all, the loss
of life. All too often, however,
most of these incidents could be prevented or at least
controlled by a professionally installed, maintained and monitored Fire Alarm System. |

Fire Alarm
Systems
Following the second Great Fire of London in 1666 a
merchant living in Mincing Street devised the earliest
recorded system for automatically raising an alarm in
the event of a fire. It consisted of a cord chased
around the walls of each room from the apex of the house
to the basement where it was secured to a weight
suspended over a gong. The idea was simple, the fire
would burn the cord, the weight would fall on the gong
and the noise would alert the occupier. We don't know
whether it worked but we do know that it was some 200
years before the next automatic fire detection system
came on the market. |
 |
Today, however, Fire Alarm
Systems are extremely sophisticated, versatile and
thereby reliable. Gone is the piece of cord and now we
have a range of electronic detection devices such as
Manual Breakglass Detectors, Smoke Detectors in various
forms, Heat Detectors to suit most situations, Optical
Beam Detectors, Gas Detectors etc. |
